Dressing for Success
How you dress for your interview can impact how potential employers perceive you, and as such, it is important to put your best foot forward. As you prepare for your interview days in advance, prepare what you will wear.
What to wear:
- Button down shirt or modest blouses / tops
- Slacks or dress pants
- Sweaters or cardigans
- Knee-length skirts or dresses
- Dress shoes
- Small or non-flashy jewelry
What NOT to wear:
- Saggy, baggy or skin-tight jeans
- T-shirts (especially with screen printing on it)
- LEGGINGS are NEVER appropriate on the job
- Clothing that reveals your chest or navel
- Shorts or mini-skirts (skirts should be below your fingers when standing straight and tall)
- Sweat suits or athletic outfits
- Tennis shoes, sandals, flip-flops, or hiking boots
- Baseball hats
- Large or noisy jewelry
- Strong perfume or cologne
- Chains or piercings, other than earrings
You DO NOT need to purchase new clothes or shoes for a job you might not even get. If you do not have professional clothes, opt for a long sleeve shirt and a black/grey pants/skirt. Make sure your clothes are clean and ironed. If you do not have dress shoes, opt for clean, polished flats (like ballet flats or loafers) or smart, low-heeled shoes (kitten heels, block heels, or stylish booties) in neutral colors (black, brown, navy).
