First Day Expectations

Now that you have gotten the job (Congrats!), you need to show up prepared for your first day. Here are some tips:

What to bring on your first day:

  • Your contact information (home address, your cell phone number, and emergency contact. You will need this to complete paperwork on your first day.)
  • Proper ID and required I-9 documents outlined in the previous section
  • A notebook or portfolio to take notes
  • Lunch & water

What your first day on the job could include:

  • Showing you your workspace
  • Touring of the workplace
  • Introduction to co-workers
  • Showing you supply locations
  • Explaining your job duties
  • Completing paperwork

Your first day on the job, although daunting, is a great opportunity. This is the time to ask any and all questions you have. You can ask questions about workplace culture, dress code, your role and responsibilities, lunch/breaks, and so on.

Potential questions you could ask:

  • How to keep track of your work
  • How to record your time
  • Who to contact if you are late or in case of emergency (make sure to save their contact information)
  • How to take break and how long they are
  • Expectations regarding time off

As you tour the workplace or as your responsibilities are being explained, ask questions. It is better to ask questions rather than pretend you understand something when you don't.

Employers typically have an employee handbook. You will most likely receive one on your first day, be sure to review it and ask questions if something is unclear. You will be expected to follow the guidelines in the handbook, so make sure you know what they are!
